Chocolate Cake with Fluffy White Frosting
Uncle Herb, Grandma, my mom and Grandpa (who is holding a very 'cheeky' cake!)

Ingredients (cake):
2 ¼ cups sugar
3 tablespoons water
2 squares of unsweetened chocolate melted
¾ cup Crisco
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 eggs separated
2 ¼ cups sifted flour
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
½ teaspoon each baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
Directions (cake):
Stir ¼ cup sugar and water into melted chocolate. Cream butter and remaining 2 cups sugar. Add vanilla then egg yolks one at a time beating well after each addition. Add chocolate mixture and blend. Add sifted flour, crème of tartar, soda, and salt alternately with 1 cup milk. Beat until smooth. Fold in stiffly neaten eggs whites. Pour into 3, 9 inch layer pans lined on the bottom with paper. Bake at 350° for 35 minutes.

2 ¼ cups sugar
2 ¼ teaspoons light corn syrup
1 ½ teaspoons vanilla
7 ½ tablespoons cold water
Pinch of crème of tartar
Directions (frosting):
Beat with electric mixer in double boiler in boiling water for 7 minutes or until frosting stands in peaks. Remove from stove, add vanilla and beat until thick enough to spread.
